Lavigne And Her Fans Have
Good Time At White River >>
|
Canadian pop-punk princess
Avril Lavigne brought a
little bit of sass and spunk
to White River Amphitheatre
Monday night.
Touring behind last year's
"Under My Skin," Lavigne
sang many of her hits near
the beginning of the show,
which pleased fans early on
during her 90-minute set.
However, besides playing her
hits, the newly engaged
singer (to Sum 41 frontman
Deryck Whidbley) did little
to engage the crowd early in
her set.
She started out with "Sk8er
Boi" off her debut record.
Normally she performs the
song with a spunky attitude
but this time she was
relatively reserved. Instead
of running around and
offering up her typical leg
kicks Lavigne sort of
trotted around the stage and
lifted her knees a bit while
she sang. Perhaps the lack
of enthusiasm is due to her
being tired of performing a
song she wrote in high
school.
Also appearing early on was
"My Happy Ending." It wasn't
until "Mobile" that Lavigne
upped her energy level and
continually flashed her
toothy smile, showing she
was having a good time. It
became more evident she was
having fun when she
performed Blink 182's "All
The Small Things" before the
encore.
Almost equally as enjoyable
and talented as Lavigne was
rising pop star Gavin DeGraw
and his three-piece band. He
is known for singing the
theme song to the TV drama
"One Tree Hill" but he
proved he has talent beyond
the television exposure.
Give DeGraw another couple
of albums under his belt and
he could draw bigger crowds
than Lavigne.
While the amphitheatre was
filled mostly faux punk rock
preteens all searching for
their own personal skater
boy, it was more than half
empty. Attendance numbers
were not made available but
there could not have been
more than 5,000 fans in
attendance.
Former Marvelous 3 member
Butch Walker opened the
show. His poor attempts to
fire up the crowd came off
as annoyingly brash and
self-gratifying. It spoke
volumes for his talent that
a pathetic cover of Kelly
Clarkson's "Since U Been
Gone" was his best-received
song.
Fortunately DeGraw's and
Lavigne's sets made Walker's
effort easily forgettable.
While it would have been
hard not to do better than
Walker, it would have made
for a sad showing by two
young pop stars with plenty
of potential if they hadn't
topped him.
