Lavigne Is Still So
Complicated >>
|
When Avril Lavigne comes to
Jones Beach on Saturday, you
can scream, you can cheer,
you can call out requests -
just don't ask about her
marriage plans.
Lavigne, 20, and Deryck
Whibley, the 25-year-old
front man for the pop-punk
group Sum 41, reportedly got
engaged in June, though
rumors had circulated for
months beforehand. Did they
keep it secret? We may never
know - Lavigne won't dish.
In fact, she's firmly,
decisively tight-lipped
about the whole affair.
Like most of us, Lavigne has
seen how the media feeds on
celebrities' private lives.
She doesn't like it. She
seems repulsed by the
spectacle known as Tom
Cruise: "God, could you be
any more cheesy?" she
snorts. And she cites
Britney Spears not as a role
model but as a cautionary
tale: "She made a decision
to go public with her
personal life - she's quite
public with it. And if you
let them in, if you talk to
the media about your
personal life, then you give
them permission to write
about it. And I'm here
because of my music."
Speaking by phone from her
tour bus in Prince George,
British Columbia, the native
Canadian sounds partly like
a teenager, partly like an
adult. Her voice is all
a-bubble when she talks
about yoga, water-skiing,
snacking on Cheezies
(Canada's version of Cheetos)
and generally hanging out.
"I'm still in my pajamas!"
she says with a giggle, even
though it's well after 7
p.m. When discussing her
career, however, she becomes
serious, even a little
intense - and, once or
twice, angry.
Lavigne's bouncy,
blockbuster debut album,
2002's "Let Go" (Arista)
established her as a
fist-pumping but fun-loving
punkette; her follow-up,
last year's "Under My Skin,"
had a more mature tone. In
recent interviews, Lavigne
has distanced herself from
her earlier, brattier image.
Actually, the very word
"image" sets her off. "There
was no image given to me. I
wore my own clothes to every
single photo shoot," she
says. "People can say,
'She's kind of stubborn.'
But I think it's good I
stuck to my guns."
Lavigne also wants to show
her independence as a
songwriter (both her albums
were collaborative efforts).
"Sometimes I'll write a song
and then someone will be
like, 'Here' - and they'll
contribute a little bit, and
then you have to put their
name on it," she says. "I'm
going to take my time on
this next record. I think
I'll be able to give myself
the chance to record the
stuff I've written on my
own, which I've had for
years."
Don't expect the album
anytime soon, she warns.
After all, Lavigne has at
least one other priority
these days. "I'm going to
get off the road, take my
time, be with my little
sweetheart and have a life -
and then get back to
business."
