The Fabulous Life Of Avril
Lavigne >> |
Avril Lavigne is on the
phone from Italy, and she
can't stop raving about the
food.
"We've been here for like
four days, and the food is
the best," says Lavigne. The
punk-pop princess is
especially excited about the
bruschetta and the caprese
salad. "It's awesome.
Italian is, like, always my
favorite food whenever I go
out for dinner, so I'm
having a heyday in Italy."
Lavigne's trip to Italy was
preceded by a tour stop in
South Africa, where on a
down day she took in a
wildlife safari. "It was
totally, like, we were just
in this vehicle driving
around the wilderness
looking at, like, giraffes,
elephants, lions, cheetahs,
everything," she says. "I'd
have to say it beat the
zoo."
The opportunity to dine on
authentic, mouth-watering
Italian food and go on
extravagant African safaris
are just two of the benefits
of being Avril Lavigne,
who's sold millions of
albums and played shows
worldwide since the release
of her smash debut album,
"Let Go," in 2002. Her
latest tour hits DTE Energy
Music Theatre on Sunday.
So how did she deal with the
prospect of leaving friends
and family behind for so
long?
"I didn't really think about
it," she says. "But when I
was home over the Christmas
holidays, and I saw that I
had like six months straight
of touring, I was like 'Ahhhhhhh!
Oh my God, I'm never going
to get home!' But I guess if
I'm going to be gone from
home, like, all the time,
this is the perfect time in
my life because I'm 20, I'm
not committed to anything,
and I don't have a family or
anything."
This was true at the time of
the interview. In late June,
however, Lavigne became
engaged to her boyfriend,
Sum 41 lead singer Deryck
Whibley
Relaxing is something
Lavigne's looking forward to
at the end of her tour, so
don't expect new material
from her anytime soon. She
says to look for her next
album in late 2006 at the
earliest, but more likely
sometime in 2007.
"I'm going to take a bit of
a break," she says. "I'm
taking my time. I'm going to
live life a little bit,
spend time with my family
and friends and spend time
with myself, because I don't
want to rush it. It's not
the way to create or write
good music."
Lavigne -- who's been
performing and playing drums
on a cover of Blur's "Song
2" at recent tour dates --
also, through trial and
error, has learned the
importance of giving a tour
a good name.
"I'm fascinated with skulls
and crossbones, I wear a lot
of that stuff and I have a
lot of them on my merch, so
I was like, 'Oh, let's call
it the Bonez Tour,' " she
says. "I thought it would be
kind of funny, but it's not
that funny anymore.
Everyone's like, 'What is
it? The Bo-nayz tour?' I'm
like no, Bones. I guess I
have to think a little
harder on the next tour
name."
