Pop princess Avril Lavigne
is reportedly engaged to
fellow Canadian rock star
Deryck Whibley, lead singer
of Sum 41.
Publicists for the two
singers confirmed their
engagement to US Weekly.
According to the American
celebrity culture magazine,
the 25-year-old Whibley
proposed to Lavigne, 20,
last weekend as she closed
the European leg of her
current world tour.
In September, news spread
around the world when
Whibley appeared to propose
to Lavigne in full view of
photographers. It was later
revealed to be a hoax, with
Whibley apparently wanting
to demonstrate how he could
dupe the media.
The couple began dating in
early 2004 and bought a home
together in Los Angeles last
year, according to the
magazine.
Lavigne, who hails from
Napanee, Ont., released her
Grammy-nominated debut album
Let Go in 2002, scoring hits
with songs like Complicated,
Sk8er Boi and I'm With You.
She released her sophomore
effort Under My Skin, in May
2004.
Though absent from the
ceremony because of her
world tour, Lavigne was
among the major winners at
this year's Juno Awards in
April, taking artist of the
year, pop album of the year
for Under My Skin and the
fan's choice award, which
she accepted through a
pre-taped message.
Ajax, Ont.'s Whibley and his
band Sum 41 burst onto the
music radar in 1996 and,
through touring, built a
large fan base with their
goofy, adolescent humour and
energized pop-punk live
shows. The band released its
fourth album, Chuck in 2004.
